By now, all of Anyogu’s expectations of becoming an ordained Roman Catholic priest were overturned. Following Shanahan’s advice, and relying on Providence, Anyogu diligently carried on as a Catechist/senior Seminarian. Anyogu’s spiritual dynamics had already changed by the time he got back to Nigeria from the United Kingdom in December 1920 because many people, including both his parents and siblings, were already calling him ‘father.’ For Roman Catholics, the essence of being a priest is to carry out the work of Christ. Once ordained, priests receive another permanent mark on their souls carrying through to eternity, indicating they have two characters, forever acting and speaking in persona Christi because of this indelible mark.
By the time Shanahan found the breathing space between ill health and travelling, details of Anyogu’s ordination had arrived from the Mother House and the Vatican. The announcement triggered congratulations from around the world and contemporary news coverage in Ireland and Nigeria ended years of anticipation and waiting:
